![]() ![]() In the process, electricity was also unknowingly disrupted to many natural gas production and processing facilities, which had already struggled to operate in cold temperatures. Power generation was unable to match record demand, forcing the state’s grid operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), to order power cut to millions of customers to maintain grid stability. Wind speeds fell to extremely low levels, and many of the few wind turbines producing power froze. Multiple natural gas and coal power plants experienced equipment failures and were forced offline. The deep freeze two years ago brought single-digit and subzero temperatures across most of Texas along with ice and snow. However, improved enforcement of weatherization standards, incentives for thermal power plant development and enhanced demand-response programs would help ensure the power grid stands up to future demand growth and the challenges of extreme weather. ![]() Taken together, the Texas grid is in better shape than it was during the 2021 deep freeze. With intermittent sources of renewable power becoming a large and growing presence in the energy mix, thermal power reliability is crucial. However, power plants and natural gas facilities still failed in the below-freezing temperatures. New regulations, weatherization standards and operational changes have addressed many shortcomings, but some critical gaps persist.Ī cold snap in the days surrounding Christmas 2022 did not result in rolling blackouts or worse, as was the case in February 2021. Nearly two years later, questions remain whether the electrical grid is now more resilient to winter weather. The Texas deep freeze in February 2021 exposed the inability of the state’s energy supply chain to withstand extremely cold temperatures. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Choosing between the Premium model and the Enhanced depends on how important the Premium’s upgrade features are to you. But it’s a lot less expensive because it doesn’t include a SmartSensor or an Alexa smart speaker, its hardware is less polished (plastic versus metal and glass), and it doesn’t have a built-in air-quality monitor. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced-the slightly trimmed-down version-functioned as well as the Premium in testing. If you have a smaller home or don’t need a remote sensor or voice controls, this is a great, less expensive option. We also recommend the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced, a slightly stripped-down model that functions identically but doesn’t have a built-in Alexa smart speaker, air-quality monitor, or remote sensors (they are compatible, but you have to buy them separately). (The unit comes with one sensor, and you can add up to 32.) There’s a bit of a learning curve involved in getting the most out of all the Ecobee thermostat’s settings, but this pays off in the end. An included remote SmartSensor detects your presence and your temperature, and it can be placed in an area that’s too cold or warm so the Ecobee can better balance temps around your home. This device can be controlled directly from its touchscreen, remotely using a smartphone or tablet, or by voice command via a built-in Alexa speaker (or with an external Google or Apple smart speaker). The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium consistently kept my home more comfortable than any of the other thermostats I tested, and it even saved more energy in the process (on average, bills were at least 7% lower than in the same period the prior year). For a less complicated option, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat remains a good choice for anyone who is averse to fiddling with settings menus, since its built-in AI does most of the work for you.Ĭompatibility: Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings In our testing, this thermostat did the best job of keeping the whole house consistently comfortable-thanks to its savvy remote sensors and its ability to take humidity into account when adjusting the temperature. In addition to offering a wide array of settings to refine your home’s climate control, it has a built-in Alexa smart speaker to receive voice commands without the need for other devices. The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium-our pick for the best smart thermostat-falls into the first category. The best model for someone who hopes to eke out every last BTU of efficiency and cost savings will be very different from a thermostat for someone who just wants everything to be as simple as possible. Rather than exploding, the gas collapses directly into the core of the star. This can happen when the core collapse of the star is especially massive. While some supernova events are explosive and leave clouds of debris for thousands of years (aka nebula) like SN 1054, the star in question seems to have begun to explode and then had all its gas sucked right back into the black hole at the center. There is nothing like a regular star 'inside' a black hole. Matter which travels past an event horizon cannot return to the space outside the event horizon, to do so would require the matter to travel faster than light, and so would require infinite energy. And now, Hubble seems to have seen a supernova blink out - suggesting it captured the moment when a black hole took over. A black hole is characterised by the formation of an event horizon. What’s left is mostly neutron stars or black holes. When a massive star expends its fuel, its core collapses into a dense object and sends the rest of its gas outward in an event called a supernova. Stellar-mass black holes contain three to dozens of times the mass of our Sun. Astronomers observe two main types of black holes. A black hole is a celestial object whose gravity is so intense that even light cannot escape it. No Escape: Dive Into a Black Hole (Infographic)įollow Samantha Mathewson. The Far Side: Suddenly, through forces not yet clearly understood, Darren Belskys apartment became the center of a new black hole. "This is a prime example that they sometimes defy that stereotype and can be nurturing instead." student at the University of Miami, said in the statement. "Black holes have a well-earned reputation for being powerful and deadly, but not always," Alessandro Peca, co-author of the study and Ph.D. Over time, the bubble expanded toward the neighboring galaxies and potentially created a shock wave that caused nearby gas to compress and form new stars, according to the statement. The Chandra data also revealed that one end of the jet is surrounded by a bubble of hot gas, which is created by the jet's particles interacting with the surrounding matter. A black hole can also form via the collapse of a neutron star into a black hole if the neutron star accretes so much material from a nearby companion star, or merges with the companion star that it gets pushed. Either of these stellar remains in turn may raise tides in the more-normal companion, causing matter to flow into a disk around the collapsed. This data was combined with observations from the NSF's Karl Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), which detected radio-wave emissions produced by the jet of particles streaming from the black hole. If the star is massive enough it can collapse directly to form a black hole without a supernova explosion in less than half a second. In a massive double star system, the more massive of the pair may develop an iron core and explode as a supernova, becoming either a neutron star or a black hole. ![]() This makes white dwarfs one of the densest forms of matter, surpassed only by neutron stars and black holes. A typical white dwarf is about as massive as the Sun, yet only slightly bigger than the Earth. This process produces powerful X-ray emissions, which researchers observed using Chandra. A low or medium mass star (with mass less than about 8 times the mass of our Sun) will become a white dwarf. Black holes feed off material from a disk of surrounding matter. ![]() ![]() ![]() Over 80 Sweetened & Guided Tuning Presets are available immediately ‘out of the box.’ Note: Registering your StroboStomp Mini ™ is not necessary for basic operation.
